How Sleep Medicine Can Help

If you’re experiencing unexplained daytime sleepiness, headaches or difficulty concentrating, you may be suffering from a sleep disorder like insomnia, sleep apnea, or restless legs syndrome. These conditions are common sleep-related problems in the United States, and people are often unaware of the problem on their own.

Redeemer Health offers the most current diagnostic techniques available to help identify and treat a wide-range of sleep-related issues. Testing starts with an assessment of your risk or likelihood of having a sleep disorder. It’s a first step in diagnosing the underlying problem. These assessments are particularly important for aging adults, since sleep problems in the elderly are sometimes caused by anxiety, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, or chronic pain. A sleep assessment should be a regular part of health screenings for older adults.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is among the most common sleep disorders. It causes frequent, short pauses in breathing throughout the night, which prevents deep sleep and results in low oxygen levels in the blood.

Redeemer Health treats both types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea, in which the throat muscles cannot keep the person’s airway open; and central sleep apnea, in which the brain incorrectly controls breathing during sleep.

One of our sleep apnea specialists can help you determine the best treatment option for your specific condition. These may include adjustments to your lifestyle, such as:

  • Sleeping on your side rather than your back
  • Losing weight
  • Quitting smoking
  • Avoiding alcohol

Other sleep apnea treatments include mouthpieces or breathing devices. Usually used for mild sleep apnea cases, a mouthpiece is worn at night to reposition your lower jaw and tongue, opening your airway while you sleep. More serious cases may require a breathing device, such as a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine. You wear the CPAP mask over your nose to blow air into your throat and keep the airway open. Surgery to widen your airway can be an option in some cases.
